Adrian Ford Photography

Black and white photography is a perception of reality which gives one greater freedom to explore tonal variations so that the photograph can better reflect the particular vision of the photographer.  This vision can relate to the mood and atmosphere of the scene or subject, as well as its emotional resonance for the photographer.  As well, tonal variations can enhance the compositional elements of form, line and texture. These advantages in monochrome photography can contribute to abstracting elements in the photograph, as well as the possibility of creating something from reality which is, in and of itself, abstract.  For instance, this can be a small detail in a scene without context, a reflected image which promotes ambiguities or a changed orientation to emphasize certain elements within the composition. The aim of this approach is to develop a photograph with visual impact which gets the viewer’s attention and then prompts a further exploration of the image in greater detail.
